One of our guidebooks told us to "ignore the hoards heading for the Fontanella Tearooms and go to the xyz instead". We ignored this advice and went to the Fontanella and we're glad that we did. It's set right up by the walls of the city giving a great view over the countryside. The service was quite brisk and the food (and especially the cakes) were delightful. We liked it so much we ate there twice in the same day.

Favorite Dish: Pasizzi - I guess from "pasties", an english dish of flaky pastry filled with wahtever. These Maltese specialities are filled with either cheese or mushy peas. at 18c each I imagined they would be tiny, so I ordered 6 of them to go with my ricotta & spinach flan. I was amzed to find they were "normal" pasty size and no way could I eat them all.
The girls had cakes - the Bacci cake was particularly nice, though I cannot remember what it was made with.
