It comes as a surprise to many foreigners, but neither one ofTolstoy, Dostoyevski, & Chekhov is considered to be ‘the best of the best’ writer in Russia by its own people. The man who wins the laurels here is Alexander Pushkin.

A poet who lived just 37 years (he was killed in a duel in the 19th century), he managed to write an incredible lot during those years. During my school time, I rather wished he wrote less:))) But that’s not to the point.

Sonets, verses, odes on any topic, epigrams, novels, fairy tales, and poems are among his vast literary legacy. The masterpiece, though, is ‘Evgeni Onegin’ – a poem considered to be an encyclopedia of Russian life, because it covers just about every topic one can think of: berry picking, Adam Smith, love, life in the country, champagne, literature, politics, Moscow, St. Petersburg – you choose. And its also quite easy to learn by heart – there are many people who can recite it in its entirety! Though not yours truly…
