In 1268 the aristocrats von Braunshorn were owners of the castle as tenants of the Cologne archbishopric. Via Lisa von Braunshorn the castle passed to the family of her husband Kuno von Winnenberg. In 1371 it came under the sovereignty of the Electorate of the Palatinate. In 1637 the von Metternichs became owners. The castle was destroyed by the French in 1689. The last holder of the title was the famous Austrian chancellor Metternich. Later there were some changes in ownership.

Description: The hilltop castle with its 25 m high keep (12th c.) was lived in by various family generations. The inner ward is surrounded by buildings and alls. The portal complex has round towers (14th c.). From the round tower a wall with battlements runs to the watchtower , and from there a fortified wall in the direction of the valley . Only cellars remain of the west section and the south wall and fireplace of the east section . The main gate has adjoining buildings and the front castle section a round tower . A rounded arch gate with outer gate and portcullis are an the main path
