El Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is one of the main tourist attractions in Cartagena. It was built in 1789, creating the largest fort to guard Cartagena against pirates, who besieged the city several times during the sixteenth century. The fortress is built of red brick and concrete, and designed so that even if one part of the fortress fell to invaders (which never happened), the defenders could fire from another part. The castillo today is open to visitors, who walk the ramparts and battlements and walk through the tunnels connecting various key parts of the fort. The feeling you get there is quite mystical, with all the ancient damp walls and surrounding darkness in the passages. One of the top places to visit in Cartagena.

Directions: Just otside the Old Town, on the hill, which you cannot miss.
