The five towers of Angkor Wat, connected by both a rectangle and cross of galleries, are built on the topmost of the temples three levels. By contrast with the transition from the lowest to the middle level; which takes place in the normal approach in the confined spaces of the covered galleries, the peak of the temple mountain stands isolated as a central massif The view from any of the corners of the second courtyard is imposing (right); the central tower, 42 metres (139 feet) high, rises a total of6.5 metres (215 feet) above ground level.
