I started my visit of De Panne in the Westhoek Nature reserve.

The Westhoek nature reserve (340 ha) is part of the largest range of dunes along the Flemish coast. With the neighboring Krakeelduinen, Calmeynbos, Oosthoekduinen and the French dunes of Le Perroquet (225 ha), the Westhoek forms a unique wildlife area.

It has been protected as a conservation area since 1935 and was designated as a nature reserve in 1957. Almost all different types of vegetation of calcareous dunes are found here and, as such, the Westhoek is part of the European network of nature reserve (Natura 2000). During the seventies, a lowering of the groundwater table took place as a result of the extraction of drinking water in nearby dunes. Some of the unique vegetation and animals are now seriously threatened. Preserved wildlife has therefore been concentrated in the wet dune slacks and dune pastures. To cope with this loss of biodiversity, large areas of the reserve are now grazed by cattle after the overgrowing scrub has been cut back.
