  Chiang Mai - Bangkok

Thailand also has an extensive rail system (but not as extensive as the bus system). Comfortable night trains to both the north and south are a common form of comfortable transportation. Actually, night trains are my favorite form of transportation because not only do you go from one place to another; you have that night of accommodation covered. Night trains are both a form of transportation and accommodation.
Trains run from Bangkok to Chiang Mai (and all the cities in-between; like Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Lamphun, Lampahn, etc...), Bangkok to Nong Khai (Vientiane, Laos; with intermediate stops in Isahn, Thailand), Bangkok to Singapore (VIA Malaysia and the east coast of Thailand, popularly Nakhon Si Thamarat), as well as to the Cambodian border.
Prices vary based on class, distance, and type of train. For overnight trips, I would highly recommend getting a second-class sleeper ticket, very comfortable and clean.
