  The Malachite Room
by Canadienne

The Malachite Room is named for the stone that figures prominantly in its decoration. It was built for Alexandra, Nicholas I's wife. Other than the rich, green stone, the floor is also an amazingly rich parquet pattern.

By the doorway in the photograph, you'll spot a seated woman. . .these women (it was a rare occasion to see a man) keep a close eye on visitors for display of camera permits and to ensure no one steps out of bounds. Busy or slow, each room in every museum in Russia has one.
