The base of the monument is inscribed with "Alexander I, from grateful Russia." There are bas-relief carvings on the other side, incuding Wisdom & Abundance, Peace & Justice and Victory & Peace.
The Alexander Column itself is impressive, but it is only one part of the Palace Square. The Square itself is surrounded by the Hermitage (mainly the Winter Palace) and the General Staff Headquarters.
