A great little town which the main highway now bypasses; at one time you had to drive through Waipu in order to continue North. It has some superb beaches and you can take the coast road all the way back out to Leigh. Waipu was the settlement of Nova Scotian immigrants and holds Highland Games every summer at its Caledonian Park. It also has a great little pioneer museum and some superb craft shops. Definately worth a diversion off the main road.
