  Sinking the Rainbow Warrior
by kiwiwahine

The 'Rainbow Warrior', a GreenPeace vessel was damaged by a French bomb placed onboard the ship in Auckland Harbour, New Zealand on July 10th 1985. It was beyond repair and two years later was towed to the Cavalli Islands, offshore from Matauri Bay, where it was sunk to become a marine reserve and an attraction for divers. Five years after the bombing a memorial was erected on top of Matauri Bay Hill overlooking the site where the ship now lies. It is one of many divable wrecks in NZ but the location of this one is a treat in itself; it is a top spot and packs out over Christmas and New Years when the GenX crowd turns up on mass to enjoy the summer sun, clear water, sandy beaches and kai moana while partying into the wee smalls. I have great memories of Matauri Bay Camping Ground and midnight skinny dips see my accom tips for the campground details.
