An almost self-contained suburb strung out along the Banbury Road, some way north of Oxford city centre.

This particular stretch of the shopping parade isn't the most attractive, but it's just around the corner from here that Sir Charles contrives to steal Lyra's alethiometer after giving her a lift in his blue Rolls Royce, following her disastrous second visit to Dr Malone.

Besides, Inspector Morse was a Summertown resident and it was from this branch of Oddbins that he habitually bought his single malts. He might well have had his attention pleasantly distracted by the car and its driver. The randy sod!
