"The Alte Pinakothek in Munich" Germany Things to Do Tip by Paul2001

The Alte Pinakothek is arguably the most important art museum in all of Germany and ranks on my list as one of the ten most important art collections in the world. As with other galleries of such importance it is a difficult place to manage in one day if you want to see everything. Usually there are about 900 paintings from Medieval times to the 18th century are on display here. Naturally the collection is very strong in German works such as those by Albrecht Durer, Albrecht Altdorfer and Lucas Cranach. However the true highlight of the gallery for me the wonderful collection of Dutch and Flemish pieces. There are many by Rembrandt. The St Columba Alterpiece is one of favourite works by Roger van der Weyden. Most importantly, the Alte Pinakothek has the largest collection in Europe of works by Peter Paul Rubens. So if you are a fan this is the place to go to.
Finally the collection also has more than a few strong pieces by Southern European artists as Raphael, Titian and Fra Fillippo Lippi. There is an especially strong collection of the works of Tinteretto here too, in fact the largest that I have seen outside of Venice.
Of interest, I visited the Alte Pinakothek on a Sunday when it is free. I do not know if they still do this as there have been some changes at the gallery since by visit back in 1993.
