The hippopotamus used to live throughout most of Africa, but now its range is much more limited. People still see hippos in large, unpolluted rivers where grass is available nearby and people don't bother them.

They live together in large herds. Mother hippos take turnswatching up to 40 babies at once :-), freeing the other mothers to feed, swim, or mate.
