Rhinoceroses have pounded across the earth since the Ice Ages. This African black rhino on my picture descends from a once large and widespread family. Iran's extinct Indricotherium was the largest land mammal ever, four times the weight of a modern bull elephant. Odd-looking rhinos even lived in Nebraska, wallowing in the water like hippos. Today only five species remain, two in Africa and three in Asia.

Did you know that the lips (not colour of the skin) tell the difference between Black and White rhinos: Black ones have mouths of triangle shape (if you look at them in front) whereas White square shape.
