Mount Desert Island, along the northern coast of Maine, is a very interesting mixture of mountain, forest, ocean and luxurious dwellings! It is also home to Acadia National Park so this unique area can be preserved for future generations. This area, as well as others along the coast of southern Maine are renowned for their gracious summer homes for the rich (including Presidential retreats). This is a custom that evolved in years gone by when the cooler atmosphere of Maine and its Atlantic Ocean breezes presented a 'quick' getaway from the opressive summer heat of Washington, New York and other centers of power. We did notice that, when driving around the Island, the dense shrubbery and high walls generally prevented a good look at these mansions. However, the airport was crowded with parked private jet airplanes and yachts bobbed gently on the swells.
