  The citygates and water locks
by Pavlik_NL

From the strong fortified citywalls many pieces remain in the present Amersfoort, especially proud it is about the wonderful citygates that have been kept through the centuries. These example of medieval architecture is also quite special as it is a combined gate for as well water as road-traffic. On either side of the town (outer and inner) the view is wonderful and one should walk through them and imagine how it was done in those dark days in the past. The gatekeeper standing in his armourment watching everyone who passes into the town. Traders, people, civilians, soldiers travelling through every day. Gates closing after "the twelfth hour" and all these oldfashioned things.
