  Delightful zig-zag streets of Assisi

Even without its famous saint's remains and the church within a church that is the Basilica di San Francesco, Assisi would still be on many tourists' lists.
The zig-zagging streets, geranium-hung balconies, lovely views (always assuming that you can see through the ever-present smog) from many parts of the town and piazzas, each with the splash of a fountain, make this place a great town for walking.
The Via Maria della Rose takes you to the Rocca Maggiore, an evocative castle much restored in the 14th century.
Corso Mazzini features the Basilica de Santa Chiara, burial place of St. Francis' companion, St. Clare, who founded the order of the Poor Clares.
The Duomo (San Rufino) has a smattering of works of art and archaeological items inside its outstanding Romanesque facade that dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries.
