  The Monument of Wilhelm Tell
by musti72

If you pass by at Altdorf, which is the capital city of the Canton Uri, don't miss the monument of Wilhelm Tell.
He is the legendary national Hero of Switzerland.
The story from the book of the german author Friedrich Schiller tells that he had to shoot an apple with a crossbow from the head of his own son Walterli. He did so and afterwards he killed the new bailiff of the Habsburg emperors of Vienna, Hermann Gessler. His comrades were inspired by Tell?s act of bravery to throw off the yoke of Habsburg oppression in their homeland, and to remain forever free.
The monument stands in front of a medieval tower built in 1517.
On the same square you find also some other typical old houses.
