One of the things I enjoyed about this site was the mundane things that you don't see in museums.
Like the place where they used to sell hot take-away food (and you thought it was a recent invention). Whilst viewing the bowls set into the right angled counter facing the street I almost was ready to order some Chinese to go, though perhaps this was being a tad unrealistic!
The atriums where the roof used to slope down to the centre and the rainwater used to come through into a pond or such intrigued me. What a neat entry to a house.
The street fountains, each with a distinctive design which had an added bonus so you could direct people to other areas. Like, "The shop is just past the fountain with the bull's head." This was of great benefit bearing in mind they didn't have street signs.
I also found the necropolis interesting though I would have liked more information about it.
One of the most notable things, especially in the House of the Mysteries, are the famous figures of the people who died in this calamity. A clever archaeologist (whose name escapes me but I think he was French) realised what the holes he was about to unearth may represent and inserted plaster of paris into them so today we have an accurate cast of how some of the 2,000 that died appeared on that fateful day, though some people go away thinking it is the actual body.
Directions: This fountain is on the Via dell' Abbondanza
