The National bird of New Zealand is the flightless Kiwi bird, which is nocturnal. (The national animal is NOT, as some might think, or Aussies might joke, the Sheep, even though they have so many of them.
The national emblem is the silver fern leaf.
I would say that one of the strongest Maori emblems would have to be the Tiki, often carved in wood or greenstone, a strong symbol of good luck.
All of these items of course are very commonly found in NZ souvenir shops.
