"Big South Roadtrips in Madagascar" Africa Things to Do Tip by Norali

To enjoy landscape diversity in Madagascar, rather have roadtrips.
In central highlands, mountains and plateaux, ricefields remind you of Asia and South-American Andes. Eastern rainforests, sometimes, adjoin with bush and desert areas, those of Southern dry parts. Of course, ATTENTION TO THE BEACH LIZZARDS, most of the roadtrips end up at the beach too. Just a matter of organization. Let's say that departing from Tana, your Big South roadtrips (Le Grand Sud) would lead to either/both Toliary (Tulear, South-West), Taolagnaro (Fort-Dauphin, South-East) and to other smaller Southern coastal towns: Manankara, Morondava for instance. Some of those use(d) to be trading spots (commodities' and, in the past, slaves' woth foreigners)
Hire a driver or if you are adventurous enough, book seats at Taxi-be or Taxi-brousse companies. Then enjoy road trips desert areas (see my "Big South Journey" Tlogs for that). A focus on Tana-Antsirabe portion is worth a glance too. 170 km from Tana & you'll be away from the hussle & bustle of the capital city already. Antsirabe is a relaxing place with a more European flair. OK, if you could try the Malagasy food at Ny Avo, tell me how it was. I've never tried it there but was told by local (friends) it was a good value for money.

Off course, if bonding with wild critters is your cup of tea, you won't be disappointed in our Southern NPs, to name a few: Isalo NP, Ranomafana..etc.. These & others are homes to lemurs (dayactive & nightactive alike). Some hotels can plan your excursions as well.
On the Morondava-Toliary liaison, you shouldn't miss l'allée de baobabs: a baobab-tree-lined passage.
