  Arch of Septimius Severus
by martin_nl

In 203AD the Senate erected a great arch to commemorate the victories of Septimius Severus against the Parthians (Iran and Iraq). This arch was erected where the Via Sacra begins to climb up to the Capitol. The inscription up in the arch was intended for Spetimius and his two sons Caracalla and Geta. However after Septimius died, Caracalla killed his brother and had his name removed from the arch. The holes of where the letters were pinned into the arch are still visible.

Directions: In front of the Curia.
