Get out of Rothenburg during the day to escape all the tourists (especially during high season/summer), rent a car, and drive the romantic road from Wurzburg all the way down to Fussen. Ideally a 2-day trip, but you can actually cover most of the highlights in a day.

Romantische Strasse is made for slow meandering, so a couple days based out of Rothenburg, or one out of Rothenburg, the next in Munich works great.

I rented a VW Golf in Frankfurt, took A3 autobahn to Wurzburg, Romantische Strasse (B17) to Rothenburg, spent the night, then wandered down Romantische Strasse thru Fussen & then on up to Dachau and into Munich. It really got Germany "under my skin" to where I really love Deutschland and cannot wait to return for a much longer stay.

Beautiful Franconian / Bavarian countryside with gorgeous vistas, forests, and mind-blowing castles will live in my head forever I hope.

The true Romantic Road lovers in good shape do it on a bike. Lots of hills, but the Bavarian countryside is so mystically beautiful, I'll bet even a lazy person like me would find the energy. I would like to try this next time.

Directions: Start out in Wurzburg and head south on B17 (the Romantische Strasse) all the way to Fussen or detour East to Munich.
