Broken Top is a beautiful old volcano lying just NW of the ski area of Mt Bachelor and to the east of the Three Sisters. Along with Mt Bachelor, it is a bit unusual lying slightly off the normal N-S axis of Cascade volcanoes. It is much older than most of the other volcanoes, the 'broken top' having resulted from implosion rather than explosion - like Mt St Helens.
It is a fairly easy volcano to climb. You access the mountain from Green Lakes which lay a couple miles north of the Cascade Lakes highway, about 27 miles from Bend. There are many campsites near the lakes and wonderful views of South Sister are had from the lake banks. You can find a trail going east from the Lakes and will reach a saddle on the NW ridge at about 8000 feet. From there you just follow the ridge up the mountain on a climber's path. There is a 15 foot rock band you will have to climb through that some may wish to have a rope on. When you reach the summit pinnacle, you travers around the south side and up to the top, looking down on the inside of the old volcano crater which has collapsed long ago. Crook glacier lies below. Time from the Green Lakes is about 2-4 hours up.
