The Guggenheim Museum eclipses the rest of the museums in Bilbao, but most of the tourists who visit the Museum of Fine of Arts in Bilbao agree it is among the finest in Spain, arguably only second to El Prado in Madrid.

The first Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao was created in the early 20th century. A few years later, also a Museum of Modern Art was opened. They both were merged in 1945, and with the purpose of hosting the two collections a new building was erected next to the Park of dońa Casilda. The building, inspired by the classical architecture, is a work of Fernando Urrutia and Estanislao Segurola. This building has been extended and remodelled several times subsequently.

The collections of the museum are extraordinary, with more than 6 000 works of art from the 12th century to contemporary art. All the masters of Spanish painting are represented, including El Greco, Murillo, Velázquez, Goya, Picasso, Sorolla, Tŕpies, Romero de Torres, Barceló, and many others; but also outstanding works of the Dutch and Flemish Renaissance, Italian painters like Belloto or Gentileschi, French impressionists?. And last but not least, a comprehensive collection of works by Basque artists, including Zuloaga, Regoyos, Chillida and Oteiza.
