Sicilia Off The Beaten Path: 40 reviews and 67 photos

  Now for something completely different.

The reason I visited here was that it was nearby to our accommodation, I had a couple of hours to spare and I was curious what those things were sticking up in the distance.
Turns out it was the remains of an old Norman castle, one of eight in the area strategically located so they were in sight of one another for signalling purposes. The one in Catania is fascinating because a lava flow has covered the lower half but this one has just been utilized by the church which has built within its confines.
Motto is a bustling little town with nice views over Etna and the surrounds and the usual attractive old church though one exception has the most extraordinary modern facade of beaten metalwork.
It also has the usual narrow streets and, one amazing thing I noted, rubbish bags suspended from upper floors on hooks and ropes for the refuse collectors.
Here and there are surprises, such as the photo I have included of a recent painting on a corner block. The castle is just visible in the background left.

othercontact: West of Catania
