"Learn About the Economic History of Bilbao" Old Town + Cathedral - Casco Viejo & El Arenal Tip by DanielF

One of the main reasons that justified the economic impetus of Bilbao was the presence of an active bourgeoisie who created finantial insititutions that provided the necessary funds for the development of the industry. The Banco de Bilbao became soon one of the main banks in the city and in the whole of Spain, today fusionated with other banks, it is known as BBVA and is one of the largest banks in the world.

The Banco de Bilbao was founded in 1855 and, following years of vertiginous growth, decided to build new headquarters according with the category of the bank. The project was commissioned to French architect Lavallé, who designed an eclectic building with a clear Beaux Arts influence. It was extended twice, under the supervision of Severino Achúcarro and Enrique Epalza respectively. Less than one century later, this building had become too small for the growing institution, who moved to a bigger building on the Gran Via.

This 19th century building is now where the bank's cultural activities are organised.
