"Have some Pintxos on the New Square" Bilbao Things to Do Tip by DanielF

Bilbao Things to Do: 363 reviews and 898 photos

Bilbao used to have an Old Market Square, which no longer exists, on the grounds of the current Market of La Ribera. That is why when this monumental square was erected, it was automatically called New Square.

It is a work of Silvestre Pérez from the early 19th century and follows the tradition of the Castilian Main Squares (Plazas Mayores). It is a large arcaded space surrounded by sober stone buildings with hardly any decoration.

On one of the flanks, you can see the most monumental building, which hosted initially the Autonomous Government of Biscay (Diputación Foral), whose coat of arms decorates the frontispiece. It is now home to the Academy of the Basque Language (Euskaltzaindia).

The Square is one of the most animated parts of the town, as there are several popular cafés under the arcades, including the famous Casa Víctor, with some of the best pintxos in town. Every weekend, philatelic markets are held and, on 21 December, the Saint Thomas fair is celebrated here: an excellent opportunity to try local specialities from the Basque countryside.
