On a not-so-clear day there's still a lot to see.

Anyone who has lived in SIcily or travelled widely there says the same thing, "You must go to Taormina". We did. It rates. Panoramic views over the Bay of Naxos and Europe's most active volcano, Mt. Etna, make this place special with a capital "S".
The Greeks weren't stupid either, so they sited a theatre here from which, on a clear day, you can see the view. Naturally enough, on the two days I spent there, the pollution was such that there were no clear views so I could only shoot the stadium. Commenced in the 3rd century B.C. by the Greeks and subsequently rebuilt by the Romans it is worthy of a look but, like so many other edifices, had no guide book or audio guide in English to enhance the experience so it got a demerit from me on that score.
It is also well frequented by tourists, especially those of the noisy school children variety, that may diminish somewhat from the ambience. Despite all that, it is one of the better examples you will find and it does have those three essential real estate values going for it - position, position, position!

Directions: Middle of Taormina (it's not that big a town).
