The Romans first settled this beautiful city; they established a camp here in AD 79. This was to defend the fertile land near the river Dee. Timber buildings called the Rows line the main streets of the city. These are two tiers of shops with a continuous upper gallery. The decorative timber-work is mainly 19th century but the Rows were first built in the 13th and 14th century and the original structures can be seen in some places. The Rows are most attractive viewed from where Eastgate street meets Bridge street. Here views of the Cathedral and the town walls really do give the impression of a perfectly preserved medieval city. The city walls were originally Roman but have been rebuilt at intervals. There is a wrought iron clock dating from 1897 on the walls at Eastgate. There is also a Roman amphitheatre built in AD 100 which is well worth a visit. The city's history is well explained in the Heritage Centre which is open daily.
The cathedral is lovely and in the centre of the city. The cathedral is surrounded on two sides by the city walls. Another great place to visit is the Heritage centre which explains the city's history in a wonderful way. There is also a lovely Roman amphitheatre which was built in AD 100.
The city is easy to explore on foot.
