  Strokkur (Geysir Area)
by superbad

Geysir is the name of the area, and also the name of the big geyser. Geysir itself doesn't go off much anymore. Many years ago, people used to dump crap in it to make it go off- soap, gravel, whatever. Apparently that breaks geysers. They still set it off for special occasions though.

Right next to the old Geysir is Strokkur, and it goes off like clockwork every five minutes or so. Very cool. The earth in the area gives off steam, and there are sulfurous mud puddles all around. If the moon had steam vents, this place would look like the moon.

Word to the stupid- steam is very hot. Don't touch it. There are a couple of signs to that effect, but there aren't really any barriers, and only a couple of volunteer park guides. I saw one family of idjits stick their fat heads right down in to the opening of Strokkur ("Hey, I wonder what's down there?" "Uh, how about really hot steam, buddy.")
