The walk, if you pick the right day, will take you between 5-6 hours if you want to do the entire trip between Riomaggiore and Monterosso.
We started at the Riomaggiore end and the short section to Manarola is called the "Lovers' Walk"; easy to understand why when you're there on a pleasant spring day as we were.
It then proceeds to Corniglia, a lovely stroll along relatively flat terrain for over an hour past the geologically-tortured cliffs until you come to the 33 (yes, I counted them) zig-zag sets of steps that lead up to the village to some entrepreneurially placed restaurants at the top.
We chose to eat in the middle of Corniglia and suffered horribly that night from food poisoning, but that's another story.
Having done it easy so far it's a bit of a shock to have to stumble for over an hour on the next section up and down crude steps, many worn or collapsed without any sign of repair.
The undulating terrain is in contrast to the gentle stroll we had encountered previously as your legs are wont to remind you when you finally reach Vernazza.
Since we had a time problem with the car parking station we had chosen we opted to catch the train back rather than see our car locked up overnight.
