"People Watching at the City Hall Square" Valencia Things to Do Tip by DanielF

Valencia Things to Do: 525 reviews and 1,179 photos

This large triangle shaped square is a compendium of architecture in the early XX century in Spain. Most buildings were designed in the ecclectic and historicist styles that were fashionable at the time.

Turrets, sculptures, domes and this kind of decoration abound in an extravagant mixture of shapes and structures which, nevertheless, retains a certain harmony.

The square occupies the large plot left after the demolition of the former convent of Saint Francis. The most important Valencian architects of the first half of the XX century worked in the buildings that line the square: Miguel Ángel Navarro, Eduardo Burgos, Francisco Almenar, Joaquín Rieta, Cayetano Borso and Javier Goerlich, among others.
