Mt Dana, Lee Vining: 1 reviews and 3 photos
Mt Dana is a mountain which can be easily climbed from the entrance station to Yosemite National Park, located at Tioga Pass. The way goes on obvious boot paths that wander along the lakes and bench-land that make up the pass. You then climb up the mountain on its western flanks. Care should be taken for the altitude, you start at almost 10000 feet and your are going to just over 13000. About halfway up, the grade lessens a bit and usually there are yellow-bellied marmots out to be seen if you look carefully. The final 30-45 minutes is over talus. When you reach the top, the view is world class. Most of Yosemite's vast back-country can be seen. Mono Lake is off to the east and the eastern wall of the Sierra can truly be appreciated. This is a place where with still air and no headache, can be truly magic.
The main picture shows the northern view off the top, Tioga Pass far below. Mt Conness - the next hike/climb - is to be seen to the right as can be seen the Saddlebag Lakes just to the north of Tioga Pass. The other views are too wide and unbelievably grand to show properly in one shot.
Address: East up from Tioga Pass entrance station, Lee Vining
Directions: From the Tioga Pass entrance station to Yosemite Park, hike east on unmarked, but obvious trails. Maybe 2 hours up.
