  Autumn colours in Otago.
by worldkiwi

Central Otago was the scene of New Zealand's gold rush that followed similar events in California and New South Wales. It made Dunedin into NZ's first and biggest city and altered the landscapes of the rugged and harsh central Otago region. Today the only gold you're likely to see is in the form of exotic trees like poplars and river willows that turn vivid in the autumn. On a clear autumn day, one might just wonder if the province's colours (blue and gold), were chosen for reasons relating to the scenery. Even on a grey day in autumn the scenery is stunning.
