Planning your Italian itinerary? If you skip the Dolomites, in my humble opinion, you are missing the best, and I include Rome, Florence and Venice in that.
This place has some of the most glorious scenery that I have ever seen though it is fair to suggest that I haven't seen very much.
The mountains here are different inasmuch as they don't sweep up to sublime peaks as in the Alps. Here they sweep up and then are supplanted by sheer rocky crags that totally dominate the landscape. The Austrian influence is unmistakeable and there's an underlying resentment by some that this area is still not in Austria, Italy having taken it in the First World War, its price for joining the Allies.
So you will see chateau-type castles such as the one pictured here near San Martino and pick up menus with German as the preferred language and certainly the spoken one in many towns.
For more see my "Off the beaten track" entries.

Directions: Just south of Brunico.
