The Bible House is another magnificent patrician Renaissance house, one of the most famous in Germany. It was built for a merchant from Weimar in 1570/72.
The sculptured facade shows scenes from the Bible (originall in colours): the lower row stories of the Old Testament, the upper row stories of the New Testament. So people used to call the facade a "street altar". Inside you find the typical hall with galleries/balconies and staircase, painted wooden ceilings from the Renaissance and Baroque stucco ceilings. On the ground floor a medieval vaulted room with only one pillar (reminding of similar ones in Regensburg) and floor tiles from the 16th century is originally preserved. The facade to the courtyard shows remains of the original sgraffiti.
The house was thoroughly restored 1998-2004 and is now home of the offices of the town's monument protection authority. During office hours on weekdays you can visit the building.
