"The Monument" Monument - Great Fire of London Tip by sabsi
Monument - Great Fire of London, London: 51 reviews and 109 photos
The Monument was built to celebrate the rebuilding of the city after the great fire of London in 1666.
Its height of 202 ft - which makes it the highest freestanding stone column in the world - was chosen because this is the distance between the location of the monument and the bakery on Pudding Lane where the fire started.
There is an observation deck on the top but the 303 spiral steps didn't sound too tempting to me!
