  Monte Palace Tropical Garden

In the 18th century an English consul bought a property in the outskirts of Funchal and transformed it into a beautiful estate, the Quinta do Prazer (Pleasure Estate). More than a century later the estate has been transformed to a palacelike residence and was later on converted in the Monte Palace Hotel.
In 1987 the Monte Palace Hotel has been sold to an entrepreneur who reforested the palace gardens with exotic plants, native to various countries (proteas from South Africa, heathers from Scotland, azaleas from Belgium!!) and indigenous plants from the Madeira woods. He also created a Japanese garden and put koi fish in the lakes.
More pictures in the Jardim do Monte travelogue.

Address: Caminho do Monte - Caminho das Babosas, Funchal
Directions: Take the cable car in Funchal. It stops at the entrance of the garden.
Take the tobogan back to Funchal (Livramento).
