The first settlements of the area are dated in the 3rd millennium BC. According to Homer, Eretrians were participating to the Trojan War with their own ships.

Ancient Eretria uncovered by the excavations was built at the early 8th century BC. It founded many colonies all over Mediterranean Sea and gained the name of a great seafaring power. It helped the revolution of Ionia against the Persians (499 BC) and Persians destroyed it in punishment, 9 years later. It was quickly rebuilt and participated to the Salamina naval battle (480 BC) where Persian fleet was completely destroyed. Eretria was ruined two more times by the Romans (194 and 87 BC) and this last destruction was the end of the city, which could not recover its previous power and gradually was erased from the map.

In 1824, during the Greek Revolution, refugees from the heroic island Psara built a new settlement that was developed to the city of today.
