  Monkeys eyeing visitors at Sigiriya
by mtncorg

In the trees, you will find plenty of mokeys watching out over the many caves that dot the base of the rock. The original builder of the palace complex had frescoes painted of his many women - numbering in the hundreds. The pictures are not always anatomically correct, but they did show a bit too much skin for the Buddhist monks who lived in the caves after the original builder was killed as a result of a family war. The monks defaced most of the frescoes. Luckily, a few did survive. The rock was known as the Lion Rock originally because of the many lions that used to live in the caves.

Address: Sigiriya
