Favorite thing: Maui has rain forest as well as desert conditions. Kihei/Wailea receives 12 inches of rain (mostly winter); Hana receives about 90 inches of rain/year while mountain areas may get over 300 inches.

The constant breezes of the trade winds keep Maui's temperature very comfortable. The winds are usually from the northeast at about 5-15 miles/hour and they naturally cool the air. Trade winds are nearly always calm in the morning hours. So use that information to help you plan your daily activities.

Southwesterly flowing Kona Winds come in the opposite direction from the trade winds and usually indicate bad weather is soon to arrive.

Maui has many rainbows for you to enjoy. Drive around the island in late afternoon or early morning to enjoy the sights. Location of rainbows depends on wind direction and speed and is always opposite of where the sun is currently positioned.

Tsunamis (popularly known as tidal waves) are a series of very long waves generated by any rapid, large-scale disturbance of the sea. Most are generated by sea floor displacements from large undersea earthquakes. Tsunamis can cause great destruction and loss of life within minutes on shores near their source, and some tsunamis can cause destruction within hours across an entire ocean basin. Tsunamis are known to happen in every ocean and sea although infrequently.

When major earthquakes occurring in the Pacific Rim have magnitudes large enough to warrant concern, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center will notify authorities and others through advisory messages. These messages are information bulletins, warnings, watches or advisories.

Highest Recorded Temperature: Kahului Airport -- 96 degrees, Kihei -- 98 degrees.

Lowest Recorded Temperature: Kahului -- 48 degrees, Haleakala -- 14 degrees.

Average Temperature: Winter months - 71 degrees; Summer months - 79 degrees.
