This building is a standout. For tourists it's a bit of a must-see. Here is the sort of stuff you come to Rome to see. Magnificent white columns towering over the piazza below, statues and fountains diverting your eyes, a museum inside. Yes, it has it all.
Somewhat sadly, Romans are not unified in their appreciation of this edifice as, to many of them, it represents fascism and thus the glory is tainted.
The man after whom it is named was king of Sardinia when Italy was unified, close to what its area is today, in the 1860's. The monument was commenced in 1885 and inaugurated in 1911.
