  ROMAN THEATRE
by whitecliff62

This is the spectacular roman theatre at Hierapolis, and in in its heyday it was capable of seating 12,000 spectators. It was actually built it two stages by the emperors Hadrian and Septimius Severus. This is one of the best preserved roman theatres i have seen and a large amount of the main stage has survived along with decorative panels and front row seats built ror the v.i.ps of the day and which you can see in the photo. Some of the theatre has been beautifully restored in the 1970s by very skillfull italian stone cutters.
