From the Flamingo Lodge area you may reserve a boat trip that will take you into the backcountry or to the Florida Bay. We went to the ticket area on Tuesday, and they only had one 3-hour backcountry tour available on Thursday during the time that we had remaining in the park, so be sure to register for these ahead of time. This tour went through a mangrove area to a backcountry saltwater lake. We didn’t see as much wildlife as I had hoped, but it was a pleasant ride and a nice way to spend a few hours if you have the time to spare. We did see a few birds, but what was really interesting were the four crocodiles we saw. Their body coloration is different from alligators, being grayer with some black marks. Their noses are also pointier than alligators, and both the upper and lower teeth project from their mouths. The American crocodiles prefer salt water or a brackish mixture of salt and fresh water, where alligators prefer fresh water.
Directions: Located in the Flamingo Marina, 38 miles south from the entrance gate.
