When people think of Oregon, they invariably focus on western Oregon: Portland, the coast, the Willamette Valley, the Cascades. There are some other fine mountain areas in the state, though. Nice hikes are to be found in the Coast Range, the Blue Mountains, the Wallowa's of NE Oregon, the Elkhorns, Steen's Mountain and Gearhart Mountain of central SE Oregon. There also a nice little range near John Day in the middle of the state know as the Strawberry Mountains. There are many trails, peaks and lakes. At one of the lakes, I came across a local fishing custom where a local was fishing the lake surface with a pistol. We decided to camp a little farther on.
