This is the name of the area that spread beyond the medieval city walls, due to the expansion (eixample means enlargement in catalan) in the last 19th century, with the construction of new buildings and big houses for the rich families.

This project was designed by Ildefons CerdÓ, who planned buildings in a square shape with chamfered corners, in a network of streets, some parallel with and others perpendicular to the sea.

For architecture fans, l'Eixample is sorta open air museum, where every building has its detail to watch. Most of them are on the same style: Modernism.

On Pg. de GrÓcia you will find the most important modernist buildings, starting with GaudÝ stuff, for example Casa MilÓ or Casa Batllˇ. But also there are other very important architects as LluÝs DomŔnech i Montaner or Joan Puig i Cadafalch who have works in the famous boulevard.

Directions: For further info there is a Modernist Centre located in P. GrÓcia no. 35, the Casa Amatller (by Joan Puig i Cadafalch)
