You might have heard about the Par Par Lay. He is a Burmese A-Nyeint Pwe (folk opera comedian). He was sentenced to 7 years of hard labor in prison for making jokes about the current government! Their troupe is now confined to giving performances out of their home. The are not allowed to give performances anywhere else. The show is interesting. But it is really a show that is a poke at the government and didn't seem to be a very traditional show. It is all done in English. There are are few skits that his wife and sisters in-law do some traditional Burmese dancing. Of course I feel they should be supported because they are helping to bring the Human Rights issues of the Myanmar people to the eyes of the western world.
The show is quite inexpensive at 1500 kyat (US$1.65) and that includes tea that is passed around. The area that the show is done in is the lower level of his house. Par Par doesn't do much talking as his brother has a better command of English. They are very friendly and love to talk with you and use the crowd interaction. They were nice enough to pose for a photo with my son after the show. Par Par is the one in the pink shirt.

Directions: Ask any taxi or Trishaw and they will take you there.
