The Indians were made to settle here as part of Raffles plan to organize the city. And as it's name says, it really is full of Indians! And thanks to them, we get these beautifully constructed building in Singapore! These foreign workers hail from Indian and Bangladesh and work in the contruction industry building all the high rise buildings you see in every part of Singapore. They are not paid a lot but certainly more than what they would get back home (*check out my local custom tip on these foreign workers). Every Sunday, which is also their off day, they flock here by the thousands, spending whatever money they have on the week's essentials. The roads are always being jammed cos it seems like they treat this place really like their hometown, walking on roads instead of pavements! The police have even been deployed to control the situation.

If you are lucky enough to be in town during the Deepavali season, you will get to see the Hindus paying tribute to their Gods by walking on fire and parading down the street with their body pierced. Quite a gruesome sight, but in actual fact, they don't feel a thing, like they've been possessed by a spirit keeping them away from harm.
And oh, Indian men hold hands when they walk, very queer I know but you only get to do this if you are best friends! How sweet... I won't deny there is a particular smell which I don't really like, but other than that, walking along Little India feels really like being in India.

The biggest departmental store around - Mustafa's, now opened 24hours and almost every tourist knows of this place. It has very competitive prices and you can find almost any other essential you may need here. The money changer has one of the best rate's in town too. Also, watch the security guard as you are about to enter as all bags need to be deposited at the open lockers while plastic bags will be tied up before you can enter the premises.
